A J-step is a setup used to gain momentum to perform a cork and its variations.

To perform a j-step, the tricker/freerunner starts out at a slight jog, places his foot slightly in front of him (blocking technique) and kicks his foot, aiming at his opposite ear or shoulder, and then the tricker leans back and follows up with a j-step trick (such as a corkscrew, gainer, cheat gainer, etc.)
